If the roof lining in your car is starting to sag, come loose or look tired, it may be time for a car headliner replacement. The headliner is the fabric-covered lining fitted to the inside of your vehicle's roof. While it plays an important part in the appearance of your car's interior, it also helps with insulation, noise reduction and creating a finished, comfortable cabin.

At Bristols Automotive Specialists in Upper Hutt, we regularly work on vehicles where the original headlining has deteriorated with age.

This is particularly common in older vehicles, classic cars and vehicles that have spent many years exposed to heat and sunlight.

  • Headliner cleaned and ready for the new fabric.
  • Refitting the new headliner back in to car.
  • Finished product.

Why Do Car Headliners Start Sagging?

One of the most common causes of a sagging headliner is the deterioration of the foam backing behind the fabric. Over time, heat, sunlight and age cause the foam to break down. Once this happens, the adhesive holding the fabric to the headliner board can no longer do its job.

You may initially notice a small section of fabric coming away from the roof. Eventually, the fabric can sag across a large part of the interior. Unfortunately, simply gluing the old material back into place is usually only a temporary fix if the foam underneath has already deteriorated. A proper headlining replacement involves removing the old material, preparing the headliner board and fitting new automotive headlining material.

Signs Your Car Needs a New Headliner

Your headliner may need attention if you notice:

  • Fabric sagging from the roof

  • Sections of the headliner coming loose

  • Bubbling or uneven areas

  • Staining or discolouration

  • Deteriorated foam underneath the fabric

  • Previous repairs beginning to fail

  • Fabric dropping into your line of sight

A badly sagging headliner isn't just unattractive. If it drops down far enough, it can become a distraction or interfere with visibility and become a WOF fail.

What Is Involved in a Headliner Replacement?

Replacing a car headliner is more involved than simply gluing a piece of fabric to the roof.

Depending on the make and model, the headliner may need to be carefully removed from the vehicle along with items such as:

  • Interior trims

  • Grab handles

  • Sun visors

  • Interior lights

  • Clips and fittings

  • Other components attached to the roof

Once removed, the old fabric and deteriorated foam are stripped from the headliner board. The board is then prepared before new automotive headlining material is carefully fitted. Getting the material positioned correctly is important. It needs to be stretched and secured properly to achieve a neat, professional finish without wrinkles, bubbles or loose sections. The finished headliner is then refitted into the vehicle and all the interior components are carefully put back into place.

Choosing the Right Headlining Material

Choosing the right material can make a big difference to the finished result.

There are many different colours, textures and types of automotive headlining available.

At Bristols, we prefer to have the vehicle here before ordering material. This allows us to check the existing interior and find the closest possible match for the vehicle.

This is particularly important with classic cars and restoration projects, where the correct colour and texture can be an important part of achieving an authentic finish.

If you're restoring an older vehicle, we can also consider the headliner alongside other interior work such as seats, door panels and trim.

Does the Windscreen Need to Be Removed?

On some vehicles, removing or refitting the headliner properly may require the front windscreen to be removed. This depends on the vehicle's design and how the headliner is installed. If windscreen removal is required, we'll let you know before the work goes ahead so there are no surprises when it comes to the cost.

How Long Does Headliner Replacement Take?

The time required depends on the make and model of the vehicle and how complicated the removal and refitting process is. We generally need the vehicle beforehand so we can inspect the existing headliner, check the material and confirm what is required.

Some materials need to be ordered, and it can take approximately three days for the material to arrive. Once the material is available, we'll arrange a suitable time for the vehicle to come in for the headliner replacement. We would require the car overnight for the installation.
